About Delta Offsets

The Delta Carbon Program enrolls conservation practices that not only reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions but protect and improve environmental quality. All projects follow the protocols established by the Chicago Climate Exchange. Current contracts extend through 2010 and include credits from 2003 through 2010.

Project Types

Corn

Conservation Agriculture

Conservation agriculture reduces negative environmental impacts including: nutrient and pesticide runoff, sediment loading into waterways, and soil erosion. Conservation agricultural practices (e.g. no-till and strip-till) keep the fields in place, create better quality soil, and sequester carbon.

Grassland

Grassland Establishment

Taking land that is degraded or has previously been in agriculture and turning it back into natural grasslands creates habitat, buffers waterways from runoff, and sequesters carbon in the soil.

Few Trees

Reforestation/Afforestation

Similar to grassland establishment, reforestation of degraded or agricultural lands has a variety of beneficial environmental impacts including habitat creation, air quality improvements, reduction of runoff into waterways, and sequestration of carbon in the tree and in the soil.

Cedars

Sustainable Forestry Management

Existing forests can benefit from sustainable management, which promotes the growth of healthier trees, ensures the longevity of forest stands, maintains and improves habitat, and stores carbon.

Cows

Methane Capture and Destruction

Methane emitted into the atmosphere is over twenty times more potent than carbon dioxide in warming the globe. Collecting and destroying methane emissions from agricultural practices, landfills and abandoned coal mines (e.g. by flaring or generating energy) can have a significant impact on overall greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the methane can be used as a renewable resource for energy generation.

Current Projects

Delta has a standardized process for enrolling offset projects. We pool together similar projects during six-month application periods, verify the projects, and register them with the Chicago Climate Exchange. Carbon credits are awarded on an annual basis, with rates depending on the type of project. more...

Currently, we are enrolling our fourth set of projects. The following information provides a snapshot of offset projects that have been enrolled to date. You can view a summary map of Delta Offset projects here.
