This method uses a limited set of calculators to estimate how many tons of greenhouse gas emissions you emit annually. You can find out if you are roughly above or below average.

The pre-entered numbers represent national averages based on a household of two people.

How many people are in your household?     This is the number of people for whom you are calculating emissions

LIFESTYLE   Enter your data   Pounds of CO2 per year

Electricity   Electricity Total:
What is your average monthly household electric bill? $
Natural Gas   Natural Gas Total:
What is your average monthly household natural gas bill? $
Heating Oil   Heating Oil Total:
What is your average monthly heating oil (fuel oil) bill? $
HOME ENERGY INFO: Appliances, lighting, heating, cooling, water heating, and leakages all contribute to your energy usage. Conduct a home energy audit to determine how and when you use energy and how you can minimize the excess--and your bills.
Waste and Recycling   Waste and Recycling Total:
Does your household recycle:
Paper?
Glass?
Plastic?
Aluminum and steel cans?
RECYCLING INFO: Recycling your household trash diverts material from landfills and provides raw material for use in remanufacturing. This helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions at the landfill as well as emissions associated with the production and manufacturing of new products. Check with your municipality to learn how you can recycle at home.
Food and Diet   Food and Diet Total:
Does your household eat meat:
Does your household eat organic foods:
FOOD INFO: Agricultural activity accounts for 7% of all greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. Cutting down on meat and animal product consumption reduces emissions of methane, a potent greenhouse gas primarily associated with animal agriculture. Eating organic products reduces emissions by reducing the energy used to produce the fertilizers and pesticides used in conventional agriculture.

Driving   Driving Total:
On average, how many miles does your household drive? Indicate per week or per year.
What is the average fuel economy (miles per gallon) for your car(s)?
Look up your car's fuel economy at: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/sbs.htm
DRIVING INFO: Fuel economy and driving distance are equally important factors in greenhouse gas emissions associated with driving. In fact, a hybrid car driven for a few hundred miles per week contributes MORE emissions than an SUV driven for less than a hundred miles per week. Give equal effort to driving less, switching to more fuel-efficient cars, and car-pooling. More importantly, consider eliminating car usage altogether and relying on public transportation, walking, and cycling.
Flying   Flying Total:
How many roundtrip flights does your household take annually
...that are under 311 miles away?
...that are 311-982 miles away?
...that are over 982 miles away?
Look up distances between airports at: http://www.webflyer.com/travel/milemarker/
FLYING INFO: Air travel is a significant contributor of greenhouse gas emissions due to the large amount of fuel used (100 gallons) per passenger, and it is growing faster than any other single source. Air travel emissions are influenced by the length of the flight, because much of the fuel use is attributed to take-off. Consider flying less, taking fewer longer trips instead of more shorter trips, and using alternatives like videoconferencing and other electronic communications.
